About
Amelia's Bloomers
Amelia Bloomer was a 19th century women’s rights reformer, however she became most known for popularising a new style of fashion for women in the late 1840s. At the time, it was popular for women to acheive the full skirt looks by wearing layers upon layers of petticoats. Not only did this put a physical strain on women’s bodies, it limited physical movement. Amelia Bloomer began wearing a new style of clothing of a shorter skirt with loose trousers underneath. Though this trend was loathed by many, it was adopted by early feminists as both a political and a fashion statement.
